OPTICAL TECHNICIAN TRAINING: Adjunct / Substitute Instructor POOL (non-credit)

This adjunct (part-time/substitute) instructor pool is for non-credit Optical Technician Training courses across the San Diego Community College District. Applications are accepted continuously; hiring occurs as needs arise for fall, spring, and/or summer semesters. Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, and/or off-campus classes.

About the Role

Adjunct faculty members focus on curriculum and teaching, with assignments divided between lecture and lab classes as determined by the department. Instructors are required to be available to students outside of class, maintain professional conduct, and foster an environment that emphasizes teaching, learning, and open discussion.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Stay current in subject matter areas.
  • Fulfill professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member.
  • Teach all scheduled classes and maintain accurate records.
  • Create and maintain an environment that encourages free discussion of ideas, interests, and issues.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • For initial appointment: Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam (renewed every 4 years).
  • Fingerprint clearance via Live Scan (at district expense) prior to first day of employment.
  • Original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Qualifications

Degrees must be from regionally accredited institutions. Minimum qualifications include one of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of occupational experience related to the subject taught, OR
  • Associate degree and six years of occupational experience related to the subject taught, OR
  • Full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in the subject matter, OR
  • Equivalent qualifications (submit a "Request for Equivalency Form" if applicable).

Foreign degrees must be evaluated by a NACES or ACEI member organization; a copy of the evaluation must be submitted with the application.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification by the American Board of Opticianry or equivalent.
  • Certification by the National Contact Lens Examiners or equivalent.

Pay

Salary placement is contingent upon receipt of official transcripts and verification of previous work experience (if applicable). Instructors with advanced coursework or experience are placed on the appropriate class and step of the Adjunct College Salary Schedules. Initial placement is at the first class/step until all documentation is submitted.
