Optical Styling & Customer Experience Consultant

1-800 Contacts · Draper, UT · 1 wk ago
HybridPart-time

About the role

The Framery, the online eyewear brand from 1-800 Contacts, is exploring new ways to help customers choose glasses online with the same confidence they would get from an experienced optician in a physical store. We are looking for a licensed optician with a genuine sense of style to serve as an embedded advisor on a research and prototyping initiative focused on how customers narrow down a large set of frames and decide what looks good on them. This is a paid, project-based consulting engagement, not a full-time position, and the right person will be involved from the earliest stages of research through customer testing of new concepts.

Engagement details

  • Structure: paid consulting engagement, approximately ten weeks, with the possibility of extension (to be assessed and mutually agreed upon)
  • Time commitment: part-time, estimated 5-10 hours per week
  • Location: remote-friendly with potential for occasional in-person sessions with the project team in Draper, UT; we expect the majority of the work to be accomplished via live video sessions with the project team and with customer research participants

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the resident optical expert across a multi-phase project, from early research through the testing of new site design concepts
  • Share how an experienced optician guides a customer from a large set of options down to a confident final choice, informing internal working sessions and early concept development
  • Review design concepts and prototypes from an expert fitting and styling point of view, identifying what would work in a real setting and what would not translate
  • Participate in or observe select customer research sessions, and in some cases directly simulate part of a proposed experience, such as offering expert recommendations behind the scenes, as part of how a concept is tested
  • Advise on which frame and style attributes genuinely matter to customers, and how those compare to the language and categories used in the current product catalog
  • Bring a point of view on emerging tools in the category, such as style quizzes, virtual try-on, and AI-assisted recommendations, informed by direct floor experience rather than only industry commentary

What You'll Need

  • 5-10 years of experience as a licensed dispensing optician, including significant time in a customer-facing retail optical setting
  • Deep, hands-on experience helping customers narrow down frame choices and build confidence in a purchase decision, beyond fitting and adjustment after the sale
  • A strong, current point of view on style and fashion in eyewear, and comfort evaluating a frame not only for fit but for whether it genuinely suits a customer's face and personal style
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, occasionally ambiguous project environment, rather than requiring a fully defined process from day one
  • Experience contributing to product design, customer research, or innovation initiatives is a plus, though not required
  • A record of industry contribution, such as teaching continuing education courses or publishing writing that advances the field, is preferred but not required
