Optical Sensor Design Engineer

About the role
ASML’s Wafer Alignment Sensor department in Wilton, CT is seeking a Design Engineer to support and develop complex optical/photonic sensor systems used within ASML’s photolithography tools. These systems include light sources, detectors, optical/electro-optical components, fiber optics, electronics, and signal processing software functioning in close collaboration with the rest of the lithography system. As a design engineer, you will design, develop, build, and integrate optical sensor systems.
This position may require access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work.
Responsibilities
- Use general Physics, Optics, and Software knowledge to develop optical alignment sensors in lithography machines.
- Build and test optical systems (e.g., imaging, testing, alignment, detector systems).
- Analyze data to evaluate sensor performance and troubleshoot issues.
- Lead activities to determine problem root causes, execute complex tests, gather data, and communicate results at various abstraction levels.
- Collaborate with engineers across disciplines (software, electronics, equipment, manufacturing) to deliver alignment sensor features.
- Troubleshoot complex technical problems and develop/debug signal processing algorithms.
- Develop and execute test plans to identify root causes.
- Implement data analysis techniques in MATLAB, optimize algorithms, and build GUIs.
- Familiarity with LabView and Python.
- Travel up to 10% domestically and internationally (Europe, Asia).
Qualifications
- JG07: BS in a technical field and 2+ years of experience; MS preferred.
- JG08: BS in a technical field and 5+ years of experience; MS or PhD preferred.
- JG09: BS in a technical field and 8+ years of experience; MS or PhD preferred.
- Experience with data processing/analysis/software tools (e.g., MATLAB), including during graduate studies.
- Hands-on experience with optical system alignment (e.g., imaging, testing, detector systems).
- Strong English communication skills (written and oral).

Work Environment
- Position is located on-site in Wilton, CT, requiring in-person attendance for meetings, trainings, and collaboration.
- Flexible workplace arrangement may allow up to 2 days of remote work per week for eligible roles.
- Essential job functions include:
- Working in an office environment, including sitting/standing for long periods (up to 8+ hours/day, 5 days/week).
- Regular commuting to ASML’s facility and completing scheduled workdays consistently.
- Routine tasks: sitting, walking, talking, hearing, using hands for fine manipulation (e.g., keyboarding, filing, using devices).
- Occasional tasks: moving around campus, lifting/moving up to 20 pounds.
- Vision requirements: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Additional responsibilities in cleanroom/labs:
- Willingness to work in a cleanroom environment (wearing coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, gloves).
- Working under ISO 9000/14000 standards in moderate temperatures with moderate to high noise levels.
- Working around lasers, ladders, platforms, and chemicals.
- Potential exposure to strong magnetic fields, high voltage, and currents.
