About the role
An Optical Technician (Optician) will deliver a world-class Total Patient Experience that maximizes retail sales while supporting patients’ medical needs. This role involves dispensing and fitting glasses and contacts based on prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists, connecting patients’ needs to the products and services offered.
Responsibilities
- Embrace and execute the Total Patient Experience to build relationships with patients while delivering medical support.
- Determine patients' wants and needs and sell to exceed their expectations.
- Assist patients in selecting frames according to style, color, facial measurements, and optical prescriptions.
- Operate auto-lensometer and manual lensometer.
- Educate and recommend specific lenses, coatings, and frames to suit patient needs.
- Accurately collect measurements such as bridge, eye size, temple length, seg heights, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and pantoscopic tilt.
- Dispense patient orders, repair and adjust frames, and ensure orders are processed in E360.
- Follow all job aids, policies, and protocols to maintain accurate frame inventory.
- Maintain frame standards with cleaning and organization of fully stocked and well-presented areas.
- Perform general office duties and cleaning as assigned by the manager.
- Assist with other duties in the office as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous medical office experience preferred; previous ophthalmic experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year in a customer/patient-facing role or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current ABO/ABOC and NCLE certifications preferred but not required (may be obtained within the first 2 years of employment).
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Must comply with HIPAA regulations regarding protected health information (PHI).
- Favorable result on background check as required by state.
- Must provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
Skills
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret insurance forms, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%).
- Regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%).
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
- Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands for grasping, writing/typing, and technology use.
- Visual and auditory acuity, including color, depth, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus (required 100% of the time).
- Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary.

Schedule
- Full-time position.
- Offices are open Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, and Saturday, 8:00 AM–1:00 PM.
- Must have open availability to work any shift within these hours, including occasional early or late shifts as needed.
