About the role

An Optical Technician (Optician) delivers a world-class Total Patient Experience that maximizes retail sales while supporting patients’ medical needs. This team member dispenses and fits glasses and contact lenses from prescriptions written by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists, connecting each patient’s needs to the goods and services we offer.

Responsibilities

  • Embrace and execute our Total Patient Experience to build relationships with all patients while delivering great medical support.
  • Determine patients’ wants and needs and sell to exceed their expectations.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames according to style, color, facial and eye measurements, and optical prescriptions.
  • Operate auto-lensometer and manual lensometer.
  • Educate and recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit patient needs.
  • Accurately collect measurements such as bridge, eye size, temple length, seg heights, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and pantoscopic tilt.
  • Dispense patient orders, repair and adjust frames, and ensure all orders are entered in E360.
  • Maintain frame standards with cleaning, organization, and accurate inventory tracking.
  • Perform general office duties and cleaning as assigned by manager.
  • Assist with other duties in the office as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous medical office experience preferred; previous ophthalmic experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year in a customer- or patient-facing role, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current ABO/ABOC and NCLE certifications preferred (may be obtained within first 2 years of employment).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must pass a background check as required by state and provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
  • Must comply with HIPAA regulations regarding protected health information (PHI).

Skills

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret insurance forms, safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%).
  • Regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%).
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
  • Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands for constant grasping, writing/typing, and technology use.
  • Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus—required 100% of the time.
  • Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary.

Schedule

  • Full-time position.
  • Office hours: Monday–Friday 8 am–7 pm, Saturday 8 am–1 pm.
  • Must have open availability to work any shift within these hours, including occasional early or late adjustments.
