Responsibilities
- Support activities of the optical design.
- Ensure the right software tools are available to support customer design needs.
- Standardize ISO work procedures within the optical design group.
- Assess and manage project risks.
- Ensure the quality of all group outputs meets customer requirements.
- Utilize optical design programs for component and subassembly designs.
- Evaluate design specifications against achievable manufacturing tolerances.
- Provide technical support to customers, identifying and designing optimal products.
- Develop a fundamental understanding of Coherent products to serve as a technology expert.
- Interface directly with customer engineering groups.
- Offer optical testing support for non-standard products.
- Act as project manager for custom projects, managing costs, quality, and delivery.
- Lead the development of new optical and electro-optical products.
- Build and qualify prototypes to meet customer and market requirements.
- Utilize Coherent Gate Review Process to gain buy-in on technical and market strategies.
- Use DFMEA design reviews to ensure robustness of designs.
Requirements
- 4-year Science or Engineering Degree, BS minimum requirement.
- Post Graduate Engineering or Science Degree - MSc or PhD.
- College science lab and engineering project experience.
- 5 years product design and applications experience.
- High organization skills, motivation, and good interpersonal skills for customer interaction.
- Strong physics understanding, capable of theoretical analysis.
- Lens design capability using CODE V, OSLO PRO, ZEMAX, and/or FRED or equivalent lens design program.
- Computer programming in C or C++.
- Concise report writing skills.
About the Role
Supports the optical design team, ensuring they have the necessary tools and expertise to meet customer needs. Manages the group's workflow, quality, and risk assessments. Interfaces with customers and internal departments to resolve design and manufacturing issues. Acts as a project manager for custom projects, managing all aspects including cost, quality, and delivery. Leads the development of new products and ensures their successful transition from prototype to production. Adheres to ISO and Coherent's quality and environmental standards.
