About the Role
As an Optical Consultant, you'll work alongside Optometrists to support all aspects of patient care and education, ensuring patients receive exceptional care.
- Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto refractor, visual acuity, etc.
- Perform verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit.
- Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, diagnostic follow-up visits, and other specialty referrals, and complete paperwork.
- Record and maintain patient records/files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
- Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, or problems, referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
- Perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera, etc.).
- Document medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and assist with clerical duties related to medical documentation (e.g., checking CPT codes, billings for post-op, office visits).
- Ensure maximum schedule utilization through pre-appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, and rescheduling no-shows or canceled appointments.
- Perform contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manage contact lens trial inventory, check-in, and take orders in person or by phone.
- Perform end-of-day responsibilities, including opti-schedule wrap-up and end-of-day checklist.
- Clean and organize frame boards, displays, mirrors, workbench, and office area to maintain overall cleanliness and visual appeal.
- Act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions as needed.
- Perform other duties within the practice as requested.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED qualification.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in PC skills, including Microsoft Office, Windows, and word processing.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with co-workers and patients.
