About the role
Optical Consultants are responsible for selling eyewear and eyewear accessories to patients. They ensure patients are fitted with the right-size frames that fit their needs and lifestyle and dispense lenses with correct prescription and measurements. Optical Consultants are at the heart of our business, delivering extraordinary experiences to each patient through technical and customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Provide patients with a complete understanding of customized recommendations for products and services.
- Develop own clientele from providing outstanding service and obtaining referrals.
- Keep current on company/industry products and procedures, manufacturer rebates, and types of lenses and frames available.
- Take and return patient calls, updating patients on the status of their order and resolving order issues; escalate issues to the Store Manager as necessary.
- Retrieve patient charts and electronic health records.
- Assist patients in selecting frames, lens type, and lens treatments including tints and coatings based on specific patient needs and facial measurements.
- Educate patients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
- Collect eye and face measurements to ensure proper fit.
- Interpret prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists.
- Create work orders for lab technicians, specifying information on lenses needed.
- Follow up on all pending orders, verify timelines, and inform patients of status or delays; notify patients when orders arrive.
- Dispense glasses by inspecting the product, checking for proper fit, adjusting if necessary, and asking for feedback.
- Adjust eyewear to ensure visual acuity, proper fit, and patient comfort using tools such as pliers, wrenches, and frame warmers.
- Perform eyewear adjustments and repairs using tools like pupilometers, PD sticks, and lensometers.
- Regularly communicate with technicians and/or store managers regarding additional patient information or order status.
- Inspect the final product to ensure no flaws; clean and polish lenses using cloths and solvents.
- Maintain overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the store by cleaning and organizing frame boards, displays, mirrors, workbench, office area, bathroom, and breakroom.
- Restock retail boards with new merchandise.
- Understand product issues and analyze problems; thoroughly and accurately answer patients’ questions regarding insurance, warranty, products, materials, services, pricing, upgrades, and promotions.
- Collaborate with technicians, front desk associates, managers, and optometrists.
- Sell miscellaneous products such as cleaners, contact lens supplies, sunglasses, and safety glasses.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of one-year experience working as an Optician strongly preferred.
- Experience with HIPAA requirements preferred.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent customer service skills and pleasant demeanor; sales experience preferred.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Dependability and punctuality.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs, bend, kneel, and stand for up to 8 hours a day.
