About the role

Tennessee Eye Care Travel Team Knoxville, a division of Summit Medical Group, is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join their practice. This is a PRN opportunity.

Responsibilities

• Prepare the patient to see Attending Physician (preliminary exam, medical history, & testing)
• Preparation of examination and treatment rooms
• Performing basic and routine vision screening examinations
• Administering eye medications
• Cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments
• Assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures
• Training other assistants
• Acting as a scribe for the physician
• Can take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity
• Perform lensometry, refractometry, basic muscle balance testing, tonometry, assess pupils, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam
• Administer diagnostic tests
• Make introductions and establish rapport with patients
• Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines
• Assists with patient education
• Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (IOL Master and Lensstar)
• Act as a scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into EMR and overseeing patient flow
• Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician
• Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart
• Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician
• Affords assistance with in-office procedures ensuring proper consent is obtained. Responsible for set up and clean up from procedure
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday
• Complies with all practice procedures and protocols, complies with all state and federal regulations
• Understands and accepts responsibility to report suspected potential errors to supervisor or compliance officer
• Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism
• Returns patient phone calls/answering questions or concerns
• Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in re-charge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers
• Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines
• Maintains strictest confidentiality both internally and externally
• Adheres to expectations of the established corporate compliance plan
• Actively participates in site-level Quality Improvement Activities

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Experience: None required, 1 year ophthalmic experience preferred
• Certification/License: None Required. (COMT) Certified Ophthalmic Technologist Credential Preferred
