Ophthalmic Technician III, Certified

About the role

The Eye Center of St. Augustine is the oldest and largest state-of-the-art eye care center in the area, offering comprehensive services including an eye center, surgery center, and optical shop under one roof. With satellite locations in World Golf Village, Palm Coast, and Palatka, our board-certified doctors provide premier care to patients across Northeast Florida. As an ophthalmic technician, you will assist ophthalmologists and optometrists by gathering data on patients' ocular health and performing clinical tests.

Responsibilities

• Review patient charts to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
• Perform testing ordered by the doctor based on exam type, patient complaint, or history.
• Act as a medical scribe during patient examinations, entering data into electronic medical records.
• Take ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.
• Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under physician direction.
• Assist with simple in-office procedures and ensure proper informed consent is obtained.
• Provide patient education and maintain cleanliness/orderliness of exam rooms.
• Comply with all practice procedures, protocols, and state/federal regulations.
• Code CPT and applicable ICD-10 codes for diagnostic testing.
• Report inventory and supply needs to leadership for timely ordering.
• Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings.
• Assist with patient-requested paperwork (e.g., FMLA, DMV) and complete electronic prescription refill tasks, including medication prior authorization.
• Assist with triage for emergency and work-in patients.
• Report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
• Contribute to team efforts by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
• Maintain a positive attitude, cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
• Current iJCAHPO COA certification required.
• Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred.
