Schedule

• Full Time - 30 hours/wk
• Center hours: Monday-Friday 6:00am-4:00pm
• Shift will fall within those hours; may need to work slightly earlier or later as needed
• No late nights, weekends, holidays or on-call shifts

About the role

An Ophthalmic Technician/Medical Assistant is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist as they assist in providing excellent patient care to the patients during their visit.

Responsibilities

• Assists in monitoring vital signs and transporting patients
• Maintains aseptic technique at all times; observes for any break in technique and cares properly for contaminated items
• Assists in stocking OR supplies and maintains adequate inventory of surgical supplies
• Checks equipment (e.g., sterilizer, refrigerator temperature) each surgical day and documents on monthly log sheet
• Assists each area as requested
• Assists in pre-op assessment and discontinues Hep-Locks
• Assists in post-op instruction review with patient
• Acts under the direct supervision of the nurse
• Performs fingerstick blood sugar and documents results in medical record (e.g., BS, VS)
• Assists physician during laser procedures
• Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the nurses and/or physician
• Identifies patient and family teaching needs and initiates intervention to meet needs
• Maintains and promotes a positive, safe environment for patients and co-workers
• Assists with or initiates emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patient’s condition
• Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with desired quantities
• Attends departmental meetings and in-service education; shows responsibility for own professional practice and on-going education
• Participates in economical utilization of supplies and medication; ensures equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner

Qualifications

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
• One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred, but not required

Skills

• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook

Physical Requirements

• Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%)
• Regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%)
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs
• Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands for constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology
• Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus—required 100% of the time
• Occasional driving or climbing may be necessary
