About the role
As an Ophthalmic Scribe, you will assist the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist by accompanying them in the exam room to document patient medical findings and direct-patient care in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). This role supports efficient patient flow, accurate medical documentation, and high-quality vision care services.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic ocular screening and record patient history.
- Assist in the efficient movement and flow of patients through examinations.
- Medically assist the doctor during patient examinations and take dictation.
- Document patient findings in the EHR.
- Prepare examination rooms with needed medications, forms, consents, and educational materials.
- Coordinate special testing needs with technicians.
- Accurately perform and document the following:
- Confrontation visual fields
- Automated keratometry and lensometry
- Manual lensometry
- Basic pupil evaluation, anterior chamber depth exam, and basic slit lamp exam
- Screening tonometry
- Visual acuity (distance and near)
- Schirmer’s test
- Basic fundus photography (Macula, Disc, and Diabetic Series)
- Basic refraction
- Communicate doctor instructions to patients and other doctors’ offices; fax reports, letters, and post-op visit details.
- Maintain practice and patient confidentiality.
- Exhibit professional demeanor while representing the practice.
- Assist with contact lens fitting, troubleshooting, medication and glasses prescriptions, minor procedures, and ophthalmic imaging.
- Record patient histories and chief complaints.
- Perform visual acuity, manual lensometry, refractometry, evaluation of extraocular muscles, pupillary defect assessment, confrontation visual field, and angle assessment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- 1 to 3 years of ophthalmic clinical experience.
- Medical Assistant designation and/or Medical Scribe certification.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and equipment.
- Strong clinical knowledge of essential workflows in an ophthalmic setting.
- Commitment to providing top-quality care.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
- Exceptional interpersonal and patient-facing skills.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Excellent communication, time-management, and self-motivation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish daily goals.

- Ability to remain calm under pressure in highly stressful situations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) designation.
