Ophthalmic Clinic Technician

About the role

Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our innovative team with the mission of Fighting Blindness For The World To See. This position supports our Kingwood Clinic and requires travel to various clinics to meet patient and provider needs. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30am–6:30pm, with weekly schedules based on provider, patient, and surgery schedules.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and document patient history, including chief complaint, present illness, family and medical history, allergies, and current medications.
• Perform and document visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, motility evaluation, pupillary function tests, dilation, and ocular tonometry.
• Provide compassionate patient care throughout clinic flow.
• Handle opening and closing duties: inventory, drug preparation, and sterile instrument management.
• Maintain cleanliness and supply stock in exam and procedure rooms.
• Assist the ophthalmic photographer with OCTs and contact patients who miss appointments for rescheduling.
• Ensure smooth patient flow to physicians, adjusting test sequences as needed.
• Troubleshoot equipment (e.g., projector, tonopen, autoclave) and assist physicians with laser procedures, injections, and minor procedures.
• Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma required; some college preferred.
• One to two years of ophthalmic assistant experience preferred.
• Certification as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
• Valid CPR certification required.

Skills

• Ability to perform comprehensive workups and educate patients on eye drop instillation and treatment plans.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to multitask and work effectively in a team.
• Proficiency with multiple computer systems and understanding of HIPAA requirements.

Physical Abilities

• Frequent movement between standing and sitting during clinic sessions.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Ability to type or write legibly in dimly-lit settings.
• Ability to hear softly spoken words.
• Assist patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
• Lifting up to 50 pounds.

Pay

$18.00+ per hour, with eligibility for overtime.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6:30am–6:30pm. Schedules are provided weekly and vary based on provider, patient, and surgery needs.
