Ophthalmic Clinic Scribe
Retina Consultants of Texas (RCTX) is seeking an Ophthalmic Scribe to join our innovative team with the mission of Fighting Blindness For The World To See. This position supports our Pearland Clinic and may require travel to various clinics to meet patient and provider needs. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30am–6:30pm, with weekly schedules based on provider, patient, and surgery schedules. Weekend hours may be available.

Responsibilities
- Correctly summarize and document physician verbalizations during examinations, including charting the exam, additions to the chief complaint, assessment, treatment recommendations, and timely chart closure.
- Accurately apply ICD-10 and CPT coding in patient charts.
- Observe and assist the physician and patient during exams, including providing medications, instruments, or emergency support as needed.
- Maintain awareness of patient communication, repeating instructions, providing written materials, or distributing patient education resources.
- Ensure patients understand all instructions and document amendments to charts according to practice protocols.
- Manage patient flow, confirm insurance authorization prior to treatment, and support Ophthalmic Technician duties as needed.
- Alert physicians to required patient forms and guide patients to the front desk for follow-up appointments.
- Evaluate exam room conditions for safety and supply adequacy.
- Notify physicians of schedule changes, especially emergencies, and facilitate communication to minimize disruptions.
- Perform other assigned tasks.
Requirements
- High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- At least 6 months of experience in a medical office, preferably ophthalmology.
- Scribe certification or certified ophthalmic assistant preferred.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of examination components for accurate CPT coding.
- Understanding of Medicare and insurance requirements for quality reporting.
- Training in HIPAA requirements and patient confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Team-oriented with ability to multitask and strong organizational skills.
- Computer literacy and accurate spelling while charting.
- Basic math skills and fluency in English; bilingual preferred.
- Ability to educate patients on eye drop instillation and treatment plans.
- Understanding of medical and ophthalmic terminology.
Physical Abilities
- Ability to walk and stand for the entire work shift.
- Frequent movement between standing and sitting depending on exam room configuration.
- Ability to type or write legibly in dimly-lit settings.
- Ability to hear softly spoken words.
- Lifting up to 30 pounds.
Pay
$20.00+ per hour, eligible for overtime.
