Ophthalmic Assistant / COA

About the Role

This position reports to a Supervisor of Ophthalmic Operations and will work within a specific section of the Ophthalmology clinic. The role requires customer service skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a degree of independent decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and document patient history
• Determine visual acuity
• Perform automated and manual refraction for diagnostic purposes
• Perform basic lensometry
• Conduct pupillary assessment and visual field testing
• Perform PAM and basin ocular motility assessment
• Conduct manual and automated keratometry
• Perform osmolarity testing
• Administer eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions to the eye as ordered by a physician
• Enter data into EMR and provide patient services
• Measure intraocular pressure (tonometry)
• Prepare patients for pre-operative procedures
• Maintain equipment and instruments
• Perform ocular imaging, including OCT, Topography, and fundus photography
• Prepare surgical instruments and equipment using aseptic technique
• Provide post-operative education
• Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

• Minimum of a High School diploma or general education degree
• Minimum of one year of experience in an Ophthalmology practice
• JCAHPO Ophthalmic Certification (COA, COT, COMT) required
• BLS Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association required

Physical Requirements

• Lifting: 20-50 lbs. occasionally (0-33% of the workday), 11-25 lbs. frequently (34-66% of the workday), 01-10 lbs. constantly (67-100% of the workday), with a maximum lift of 50 lbs.
• Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.
• Occasional to frequent standing and walking

• Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing)
