About the role

The Ophthalmic Assistant plays a critical role in delivering high-quality patient care by accurately obtaining and documenting detailed medical histories and performing a variety of ophthalmic tests as directed by the physician. This role supports administrative and business functions to maintain the clinic’s efficient daily operations, contributing to a positive and seamless patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient workups – obtain and document exam information, perform testing prior to the exam
  • Perform special testing as ordered by the physician
  • Return patient phone calls
  • Scribe for the doctor(s)
  • Complete reports
  • Protect patients' rights by maintaining the confidentiality of personal and financial information
  • Maintain operations by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Prepare patients for exams and ensure examination rooms and equipment are properly maintained
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate Degree preferred)
  • Preferred 2 years of previous ophthalmic or optometric patient care or medical office experience (willing to train the right candidate)
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) preferred, but not required (we will help you get certified if you aren’t already)
  • Extraordinary customer service and team member relations – REQUIRED
  • Multiline phone system experience preferred
