About the role
The Chemical Stripping Operator at Materion is responsible for mechanically and chemically removing metals from PVD shield components, cleaning, inspecting, and packaging the components according to operating procedures. This position operates and maintains high-pressure sandblasters, performs calculations for metals recovered, and processes silver nitrate through the sodium formate precipitation process.
Responsibilities
- Mechanically and chemically remove metals from PVD shield components using appropriate chemical solutions.
- Clean, inspect, and package components per operating procedures.
- Operate and maintain high pressure sandblasters.
- Perform calculations to determine the amount of metals recovered from customer materials.
- Maintain monthly logs tracking production totals.
- Maintain and operate metals recovery system.
- Maintain and operate cyanide destruct unit, including bringing in chemicals and calibrating meters.
- Process Silver Nitrate through the Sodium Formate precipitation process.
- Perform Waste Water Treatment Processes per approved SOP.
- Ability to process PVD shield components in various acids and bases for hours at a time.
- Adhere to Clean Room regulations and follow all procedures throughout the day.
- Notify appropriate people of low quality parts.
- Verify the accuracy of the label.
- Accurately count, weigh, record information while carefully placing product into bags.
- Perform Daily particle measurements in the clean room.
- Must be able to read and interpret specifications and part drawings.
- Follow strict operating and safety procedures.
- Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment.
- Maintain superior housekeeping in stripping and chemical areas.
- Ensure proper location of chemicals.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and move full 55 gallon drums of chemicals.
- Serves on the Emergency Response Team.
Qualifications
- Forty hour Hazwoper Certification preferred.
- Background in chemical processing.
- High school chemistry or equivalent on the job experience.
- Knowledge of safe chemical handling and storage.
- Experience in chemical process (six months preferred).
- Must complete company safety training program.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as shop orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write standard documentation.
- Ability to communicate with other employees to share information and solve problems.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and conversion of measurement units.
- Very alert and able to accurately calculate the precious metal content of solutions and account for customers precious metals.
- Regularly stand, walk, climb, balance, talk, hear, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and reach above shoulders.
- Must be able to move 55 gallon 600-700 pound drums using a hand cart.
