About the role
The OPERATOR I – Crum/Ridley Creek Treatment Plants position is available at Essential Utilities, Inc., a company that provides water and wastewater services across eight states. This role involves operating and maintaining water treatment plants, including obtaining and maintaining a Waterworks Operators Class A license.
Responsibilities
- Shift work required, with potential for permanent shift position as openings occur.
- Location at Crum Creek Water Treatment Plant, with possible rotation to Ridley Creek Water Treatment Plant.
- Obtain and maintain a Waterworks Operators Class A license with all required modules.
- Must have associate degree or 2 years of trade school/training in waterworks field or equivalent experience.
- Labor-intensive work, including lifting up to 75 pounds.
- Maintain compliance with Aqua safety requirements, including handling hazardous chemicals and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform mechanical repairs and calculations for plant equipment.
- Available for overtime to support continuous plant operations.
- Valid US driver’s license required; CDL with Hazardous Material endorsement and learner’s permit within 60 days of job award.
- Must pass random drug and alcohol testing, reasonable suspicion testing, post-accident testing, and bi-annual medical certification.
Requirements
- Must accept the position and its requirements.
- Must have a valid US driver’s license and obtain a CDL with necessary endorsements within 120 days of job award.
- Must have 2 years of experience in waterworks field or similar field with mechanical, treatment, and mathematical skills.
- Must have 3 years to obtain a Waterworks Operators Class A license, contingent upon experience requirements.
- Must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle based on DOT regulations.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or 2 years of trade school/training in waterworks field or equivalent experience.
- 2 years of experience in waterworks field or similar field with mechanical, treatment, and mathematical skills.
- Valid US driver’s license.
- CDL with Hazardous Material endorsement and learner’s permit within 60 days of job award.
Skills
- Strong mechanical skills.
- Ability to make mathematical calculations for chemical dosages.
- Good understanding of hazardous chemical handling and PPE requirements.
- Availability for overtime and emergency situations.

Pay
The hourly rate of pay is $38.91. New hires hired on or after December 15, 2022, will receive a $4.00 per hour wage reduction that will be returned in one dollar increases over a four-year period. Annual contract increases are also provided.
