About the Role

This position serves as Operations Supervisor, Surplus Sales in Logistics—a unit of Integrated Procure-to-Pay-Solutions (IPPS) housed within Residential, Retail, and Supply Chain Services (RRSS). The role is responsible for the supervision and strategic growth of the UC San Diego excess property disposal program (Surplus Sales). The incumbent receives predetermined work assignments subject to a moderate level of control and review, directs subordinates using established guidelines, and oversees all aspects of freight receipt, inspection, refusal, re-direction, or pick-ups.

This position manages, plans, organizes, and directs the daily administrative and warehouse operations of UC San Diego Surplus Sales, including supervision and training of personnel, operational responsibilities (pickup/distribution of material, inventory maintenance, property disposal, bidding process, cash handling, financial and budgetary matters), advertising, and maintaining the interactive website. The role operates a retail Surplus Sales store selling to the general public and University Departments, develops relationships to encourage repeat clientele, and ensures compliance with State, Federal, and University regulations governing material transportation, including hazardous goods.

The Operations Supervisor participates in Surplus budget planning, coordinates and executes projects, and provides operational and strategic leadership to staff and student employees, aligning initiatives with IPPS strategic direction.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and train personnel in daily administrative and warehouse operations.
• Oversee freight receipt, inspection, refusal, re-direction, or pick-ups.
• Manage inventory, property disposal, bidding processes, and cash handling.
• Maintain financial and budgetary matters for Surplus Sales.
• Operate and manage a retail Surplus Sales store for the general public and University Departments.
• Develop and maintain relationships to encourage repeat clientele and strong partnerships.
• Ensure compliance with State, Federal, and University regulations for material transportation, including hazardous goods.
• Participate in long-range planning, coordinating, organizing, and staffing for warehouse operations.
• Oversee space utilization, building and equipment security, and expenditure control.
• Coordinate and execute projects to align with IPPS strategic direction.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to professional and support staff.

Requirements

• Working knowledge of storeroom and inventory practices, including receipt, storage, and distribution of merchandise.
• Knowledge of material handling and warehousing methods, with prior experience in a large warehouse or distribution center.
• Skills in implementing and monitoring customer service standards.
• Proficient in making business decisions with integrity, accountability, and effective communication.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and use sound judgment in responding to issues.
• Strong project management skills, including setting objectives, identifying barriers, and adjusting action plans.
• Supervisory experience with skills in guidance, coaching, and mentoring staff.
• Experience setting unit objectives, ensuring teamwork, and stimulating productivity.
• Experience in an operations leadership capacity in a large, decentralized, academic environment (e.g., major research university).
• Working knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to receipt, handling, storage, and distribution of materials.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel) or other relevant programs.
• Demonstrated ability to operate material handling equipment.
• Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Pay

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,700 - $118,500 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $32.42 - $56.75
Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale for this position is $75,000 - $85,000/Annually.
