About the role

This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the activities of custodial staff across a group of campus buildings, including the Engineering and Digital Innovation Center and the Plant and Environmental Sciences building. The role also involves coordinating and overseeing 3rd Shift custodial staff in Anthony Hall, BioMed Physical Sciences, Engineering, and STEM. The Operations Supervisor II leads with an emphasis on empathic employee engagement, fostering a high-performance, innovative, and collaborative culture while acting as a steward to preserve and maintain the campus as a teaching, demonstration, and research resource.

Responsibilities

• 40%: Direct cleaning operations and custodial staff by:
  • Using Performance Excellence as a planning and evaluation tool to guide, engage, and motivate staff using T-shaped goal development, with a focus on succession planning and lifelong learning.
  • Recruiting and retaining a diverse, well-qualified, and high-performing team.
  • Creating a positive work environment aligned with the University’s commitment to equal opportunity and diversity.
  • Promoting and enforcing departmental practices, processes, and policies.
  • Coaching and mentoring staff to develop talents and empower employees.
  • Leading with empathic engagement, encouraging collaborative communication and innovation.
  • Ensuring accountability by upholding University policies, safety, compliance, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Enforcing dependability standards for all staff.
• 35%: Train and evaluate front-line employees; plan staffing and time schedules.
• 15%: Enforce departmental and University rules; resolve employee complaints and grievances.
• 10%: Assist with preparing short-term goals and objectives for employees; evaluate performance through cleanliness and process audits using departmental assessment tools.

The position requires responding to emergencies, inquiries, and complaints from faculty, students, tenants, and the public, as well as inspecting buildings to assess problems, damage, and overall condition to ensure timely repairs and uphold safety standards.

Requirements

• Knowledge equivalent to that acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical, vocational, or business school with coursework in Human Resources, Communications, or Business.
• One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work and supervisory experience in custodial or facilities operations.
• Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license; must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems in buildings.
• Experience with computer usage, inventory control, health care facility cleaning, and hazardous materials regulations.
• Experience with heavy-duty equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, and strippers.
• Familiarity with University buildings and departmental needs.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and database software (e.g., EBS/SAP, Planon).
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Solid organizational skills with the ability to multitask and manage frequent interruptions.
• Aptitude and willingness to learn new software, data analysis tools, and methodologies.
• Creative problem-solving skills and a dedication to continuous learning.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively across stakeholder groups.

Pay

$59,100 - $72,200 annually, depending on experience.

Schedule

3rd Shift: Sunday - Thursday, 9:30 PM - 6:30 AM. May be required to work after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
