Operations Supervisor, Chemistry

About the role

The Operations Supervisor, Chemistry is responsible for the analysis of food samples and supervises departmental personnel conducting routine analysis at our Crete, IL laboratory (3600 Eagle Nest Dr, North Building).

Responsibilities

• Supervise departmental personnel to ensure operations comply with Standard Operating Procedures and assigned tasks.
• Communicate emerging client requirements to laboratory personnel as needed.
• Report procedural and operational difficulties or delays to client service personnel or clients.
• Read, calculate, and record analysis data to produce client reports; correct any discrepancies.
• Administer corporate human resource programs, including recruitment, retention, compensation, training, performance appraisal, and employment record documentation.
• Educate and train departmental personnel on correct procedures and new analysis methods; evaluate and recommend modifications to current methods.
• Arrange and document work schedules to ensure accurate and efficient completion of analysis.
• Assist with analysis tasks as needed to ensure timely results.
• Maintain supplies and instrumentation for operating departments.
• In conjunction with the Operations Manager or Lab Director, cease specific analyses when quality system evidence indicates the process is not in control.
• Maintain and ensure employees obtain sufficient knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
• Maintain expertise in food science by attending seminars and using available reading materials.
• Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
• Initiate actions to prevent or minimize departures from the quality system or test procedures, addressing resource needs such as client turn-around time, overtime, and materials availability.
• Perform other related tasks as needed.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 2–5 years of relevant work experience, or a Master’s degree.
• Broad knowledge of microbiology or chemistry, typically obtained through a relevant degree or job experience.
• General knowledge of food science to supervise sample analysis.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies to ensure a safe working environment.
• General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to process client data and record results.

Work Environment

• Laboratory setting with proper lighting and temperature control.
• Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials; safety equipment (gloves, laboratory coat, eyeglasses) may be required.
• Daily use of an autoclave to complete analysis processes.
• Continuous lifting of materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Extended time spent in a standing position.
• Ability to detect slight variations in shades of colors.

Communication

• Frequent contact with client service personnel and laboratory management to solve difficulties and provide status reports.
• Some communication with clients.

Pay

Compensation range: $65,000 – $75,000 annual salary USD. Potential bonus: up to 5% based on performance.

Schedule

Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
