About the Supply Chain Operations Internship

This paid, 40-hour-per-week internship provides hands-on training to develop leadership skills within a Target Supply Chain Facility. As an Operations Intern, you’ll gain insight into supply chain operations and prepare for a management role. You’ll work closely with managers and team members to understand daily operations, lead a team, and drive results.

During the internship, you’ll:

  • Lead and support daily operations alongside team members
  • Work with a mentor to learn effective leadership in a supply chain facility
  • Step into leading a work center with guidance
  • Receive ongoing developmental support and training

The internship helps build skills for a career in operations, including:

  • Building and managing team culture
  • Problem-solving and change management
  • Retail business fundamentals
  • Planning daily/weekly workloads and managing teams to meet goals
  • Developing business strategies
  • Understanding key departments like Inbound, Outbound, and Warehousing

Responsibilities

  • Lead team members on the facility floor, aligning them with daily priorities
  • Maintain high standards for quality and inventory accuracy through standardized processes and accountability
  • Track KPIs such as safety, teamwork, quality, and productivity to identify gaps and drive improvements
  • Carry out process improvement initiatives using methodologies like Gemba, Fish Bone Analysis, and 5 Whys
  • Facilitate communication between IT and operations teams to address system issues and conduct WMS testing
  • Recruit and mentor team members to foster a continuous improvement mindset and leadership development
  • Address team member concerns and remove operational hurdles to ensure smooth operations
  • Lead daily meetings to share company and site-specific information
  • Plan and organize shift goals to achieve targets
  • Provide summaries of results, including hurdles, successes, and key learnings
  • Conduct audits for safety, quality, and productivity, and coach team members based on observations
  • Perform safety walks to identify, resolve, and report findings
  • Follow up on team member attendance and provide necessary coaching
  • Partner with leaders on team member performance through teaching, coaching, and feedback
  • Recommend solutions for business or team opportunities
  • Seek growth opportunities and continuously learn throughout the internship
  • Demonstrate Target’s leadership expectations and actively participate in training and developmental activities
  • Take initiative to step out of your comfort zone and embrace new assignments
  • Foster a culture of ethical conduct, safety, compliance, and inclusivity
  • Carry out departmental duties through internship rotations
  • Understand business reporting and guest insights to troubleshoot and address opportunities
  • Develop business acumen by learning about all business areas
  • Set daily goals and expectations with building leaders

Requirements

  • Participation in school or extracurricular activities with leadership experience
  • Strong interest in retail, particularly within supply chain operations
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively

  • Ability to access all levels and areas of the facility to respond to team member issues
  • Ability to understand instructions, reports, and information
  • Ability to climb ladders and handle merchandise safely, including frequently lifting up to 15 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds
  • Flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Regular work attendance
