About the role

As an Operations Engineer at Amazon, you will lead and manage the lifecycle of challenging cross-functional projects, developing and delivering the next generation of sortation and distribution solutions. You will play an integral part in planning and implementing facility network infrastructure, including new builds, retrofits, expansions, and program initiatives. This role requires partnering with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely project handover and involves 75% regional travel on a yearly basis. When not traveling, you must work from a corporate office, with relocation assistance potentially provided.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently with internal and external teams to manage the lifecycle of challenging projects, acting as the owner in delivering on project objectives and targets.
  • Actively participate in engineering reviews, impacting proposed solutions on system components, overall architecture, and facility processes.
  • Partner with internal teams, stakeholders, and external vendors to set project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Proactively assess stakeholders’ dependencies and milestones, problem-solve, and drive solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Lead and coordinate execution efforts in delivering systems and automated equipment designs per established standards and guidelines.
  • Perform equipment/system installation, throughput, and safety qualifications.
  • Simplify, optimize, and remove bottlenecks while resolving difficult system problems or technical deficiencies.
  • Lead effective meetings by setting objectives, driving discussions, and ensuring alignment on expectations with internal and external teams.
  • Document meeting discussions, decisions, and future steps to ensure accountability.
  • Communicate project status, risk analysis, and mitigation plans promptly and accurately.
  • Articulate system and equipment designs, including layouts, technical specifications, and functional capabilities.
  • Manage change order controls, purchase orders, and invoice validation/approvals.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across multiple projects.
  • Identify and lead process improvement initiatives to enhance team efficiencies and delivery.
  • Generate high-quality, cost-effective solutions in compressed timeframes through collaboration.
  • Travel up to 75% domestically, with variable intensity including up to three weeks in a row, including weekends.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial or manufacturing engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience as an industrial engineer, operations engineer, manufacturing engineer, or project engineer in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with Material Handling Equipment (MHE).
  • Knowledge of automated material handling systems, packaging technologies, and storage solutions.
  • Intermediate knowledge of AutoCAD, VBA, and SQL.
  • Position includes up to 75% travel (nationwide). Travel involves air travel to regional airports and driving to site locations.
  • A valid driver's license is required due to project assignments in areas with limited public transportation and rideshare options.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in engineering, management, or technology.
  • Experience working with and managing third-party vendors.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma and lean manufacturing.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio, and MS Project).

Pay

The base salary range for this position varies by location:

  • San Francisco, CA: $84,300 - $126,400 USD annually
  • Boston, MA: $76,600 - $114,900 USD annually
  • New York, NY: $84,300 - $126,400 USD annually
  • Nashville, TN: $68,900 - $103,400 USD annually
  • Austin, TX: $76,600 - $114,900 USD annually
  • Houston, TX: $76,600 - $114,900 USD annually
  • Irving, TX: $76,600 - $114,900 USD annually

The Operations Engineering (OE) Execution Team is responsible for delivering Automation Infrastructure projects related to material handling, storage, processing, and product delivery for retrofits and new builds across North America. The team collaborates to ensure internal customers have the capabilities to deliver on Amazon’s Customer Promise. The team focuses on continuous improvement, leveraging lessons learned to enhance systems and processes globally.
