About the role
A nurse in Surgical Services is a Registered Nurse who assumes 24-hour responsibility in supervising, coordinating and directing the activities of the Operating Room/CSR in the performance of consistently high quality patient care. He/she will provide exceptional care for the patient in the peri-operative environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are the core of practice.
Responsibilities
- Provides exceptional care for the patient in the peri-operative environment
- Assumes 24-hour responsibility in supervising, coordinating and directing the activities of the Operating Room/CSR
- Manages the daily operations of the Perianesthetica Services side of the Operating Room including pre-admission testing, preop holding, PACU and secondary recovery
- Maintains the flow of the surgical schedule using staff, equipment and supplies appropriately
- Maintains oversight of the monthly staff schedule to maintain adequate staffing levels
- Acts as an effective steward of resources, monitoring and improving supply management and process improvement initiatives
- Analyze and report statistical data for the peri-operative service line
- Active member of performance improvement activities and ensures adherence to regulatory requirements
- Protects the rights of the patient, the surgical staff and the facility by providing legal and ethical healthcare by exhibiting ethical conduct and a clear understanding of legal guidelines
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining a high level of clinical expertise and adapting to new information, technology and changing trends in perioperative nursing practice
- Maintains and develops effective inter-departmental relationships
- Owner of environment of care standards and updates for surgery department
- Participates in staff development/evaluation of competency, performance reviews, counseling
- Actively participates in the orientation, in-service training and continuing education of all personnel; maintains accurate and complete competency files
- Maintains accurate complete records of all activity that is required by hospital policy and regulatory agency requirements
- Demonstrates ability to assist the physician with procedures in the operating room, set up cases and maintains AORN guidelines and hospital policy compliancy for patient safety, sterility, traffic flow in the operating room and accurate surgical counts
- Acts as a surgical liaison for family, support and information management
- Ability to develop and maintain rapport with others
- Ability to create and maintain an environment that results in above average satisfaction ratings from employees, patients, and physicians
Requirements
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent department-specific experience
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing, Master’s preferred
- Registered Nurse with current Virginia RN license
- Current BLS for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association or CPR through American Red Cross
Qualifications
- Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
- Ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs
- Knowledge of perioperative nursing practice
- Experience in managing the daily operations of the Perianesthetica Services side of the Operating Room
- Experience in analyzing and reporting statistical data for the peri-operative service line
- Experience in performing legal and ethical healthcare
- Experience in maintaining and developing effective inter-departmental relationships
- Experience in participating in staff development/evaluation of competency, performance reviews, counseling
- Experience in creating and maintaining an environment that results in above average satisfaction ratings from employees, patients, and physicians
