Role Overview
This internship trains licensed Registered Nurses, including new graduates and those from non-surgical backgrounds, to become perioperative nurses in the operating room.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate patients pre-surgery and provide education about procedures
- Prepare patients for surgery, manage assessments, medications, and surgical site verification
- Participate in surgical protocols, including briefing, time-outs, and debriefings
- Recognize and respond to patient emergencies, delivering high-quality care
- Assess, monitor, and document patient conditions during shifts
- Educate patients and families about medical conditions and follow-up care
- Work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, applying critical thinking and leadership skills
- Complete all course assignments, assessments, and meet professionalism standards for program completion
Qualifications & Skills
- Active RN license in good standing (Tennessee or Kentucky)
- Minimum of 1 year RN experience in any specialty
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification within 30 days of start
- Strong communication, assessment, and clinical skills
Program Details
A 5-month blended-learning program combining didactic, online, lab, and clinical components. Participants work five 8-hour days, with clinical hours at their hired facility, progressing toward independent practice. Certification eligibility and future career pathways in perioperative nursing are supported through this program.
