About the Role

Prelicensure Clinical Instructors (Hourly) are subject matter experts who teach and mentor students during experiential clinical coursework, in both remote and onsite environments. This faculty position varies in instructional methods based on student and facility needs. The Clinical Instructor works on a team to support an assigned group of students, offering specialized instruction on challenging clinical coursework. Faculty interacts with students in group and one-on-one settings, ensuring student success within their clinical placement while overseeing clinical learning.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a steward for carrying out WGU’s mission and strategic vision, demonstrating commitment, effectiveness, and consistency.
  • Serve as a professional role model for students in communication, ethical comportment, and problem-solving.
  • Provide expertise in an assigned content area and maintain current knowledge in the field.
  • Implement the philosophy and goals of the program, fostering student learning through innovative teaching practices.
  • Respond urgently to meet student needs, communicating professionally and respectfully with students and the WGU community.
  • Make appropriate student referrals for remediation or other needs using WGU policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with the student's assigned coach/preceptor to discuss student progress and concerns.
  • Provide final review and approval for student's clinical time and offer proactive support and outreach.
  • Use technology-based teaching and communication platforms to aid students in developing competencies.
  • Submit electronic clinical student evaluation forms after completion of clinical intensives.
  • Collaborate with university professionals to promote a positive, student-obsessed atmosphere.
  • Respond to changing requirements, priorities, and short deadlines.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant state regulations and conduct in-person and remote student evaluations.
  • Support the Health Placement Team to secure clinical partnerships as needed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing (verified).
  • Two years minimum nursing experience.
  • Work history demonstrating continuous advancement and success in roles requiring creative problem-solving and collaboration.
  • Unencumbered RN license and active, unencumbered license in the designated state.
  • Compliance with state and federal legislative requirements and college accreditation requirements for credentialing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate or terminal degree in a specific content area.
  • Strong experience with distance education and distance learning students.
  • Prior experience in clinical teaching/nursing education.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Schedule

This is a part-time, intermittent position (classified to work less than 30 standard weekly hours).
