Job Summary
A substitute teacher plays a vital role in supporting LUMIN’s Christ-centered mission by ensuring continuity of instruction and care during the absence of a regular classroom teacher. The ideal candidate demonstrates flexibility, professionalism, and a positive spirit, while effectively implementing lesson plans and fostering a structured, nurturing, and engaging learning environment.
Key responsibilities
- Implement lesson plans and assignments prepared by the classroom teacher to ensure continuity of learning.
- Provide clear, concise instructions and adapt teaching strategies as needed to maintain student engagement.
- Remain flexible and responsive to unexpected changes in schedule or lesson content with a positive attitude.
- Maintain an orderly, respectful, and disciplined classroom environment.
- Use positive reinforcement to encourage appropriate behavior and student effort.
- Demonstrate a calm, confident presence, combining high expectations with genuine care and support.
- Build rapport with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Actively circulate the classroom to monitor student progress, offer assistance, and ensure engagement.
- Supervise students in various settings, including classrooms, hallways, lunch areas, and during transitions, ensuring safety and wellbeing.
- Communicate effectively with school administrators, staff, students, and families.
- Receive feedback with openness, viewing it as an opportunity for growth.
- Provide the regular teacher with a detailed summary of the day, including lesson progress, student behavior, and any notable issues.
Spiritual and Professional Responsibilities
- Model Christian character and uphold the school’s mission, core values, and statement of faith in all interactions.
- Be available to encourage and minister to students’ spiritual needs as appropriate.
- Respect and maintain confidentiality, following all school policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required.
- Teacher Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction certification preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner within an urban population of children, youth and adults.
- Possess the ability to establish a rapport with youth, parents and other staff, while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Experience working in an urban school environment is desired.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Dependable, punctual, and adaptable to a variety of teaching situations.
- Ability to commute to all of our campuses in Milwaukee and Racine.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with other disciplines in problem solving.
- Ability to communicate and work in multiple settings and environments.
Working Conditions
- Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time, depending on work tasks.
- Work will be performed in a school environment.
- Willingness to be outside with students during recess/breaks.
- Clear need to understand and lead efforts in child and school safety.
