On-Call Field Archaeologist
WSP is seeking an On-call, Part-Time Field Archaeologist for our offices in Louisville, Kentucky; Lexington, Kentucky; Kansas City, Missouri; Ballwin, Missouri; and Jefferson City, Missouri. This role involves projects with our Heritage and Cultural Resources Earth & Environment Team, offering opportunities with federal, state, and commercial clients.
About the role
This is an on-call, hourly position with potential for long-term work and possible full-time employment based on workload. The role requires 100% travel and is physically demanding, involving fieldwork in all weather conditions.
Responsibilities
- Assist with field projects during all phases of archaeological testing (primarily Phase I and II), including pedestrian reconnaissance, shovel tests, and test unit excavation supervised by a Field Director.
- Document findings through detailed note-taking, including Munsell soil descriptions and completing field forms.
- Assist in prehistoric and historic artifact identification and document archaeological deposits.
- Work as part of a team while exercising responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct, health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or a related field.
- Completion of an archaeological field school.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and physically able to conduct all aspects of fieldwork in all weather conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions and uphold workplace safety policies.
- Location in the southeast or Missouri and surrounding states is preferred, though opportunities to work in other states may arise.
