About the Role

The City of Rochester invites applications for a part-time Office Assistant position at the Rochester Public Library. This role may be the first point of contact for library customers and supports the Rochester Reading Champions (RRC) program. The position is year-round, available for 2 years with potential for extension based on funding, and averages up to 5 hours per week with varying schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general office duties such as filing, copying, and preparing mail.
  • Act as a receptionist by assisting customers and answering emails.
  • Update various departmental information.
  • Assist with scheduling program activities, events, and spaces.
  • Support processing new hire paperwork and time-entry for seasonal employees or volunteers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google products.
  • Ability to interact professionally and tactfully with others.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Comfortable working in an environment with distractions and flexibility is necessary.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience working in a similar environment.
  • Experience performing clerical duties.
  • Knowledge of literacy-related terminology.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.

Pay

The wage range for 2026 is $14.71 to $17.86 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Physical and Environmental Criteria

This position is classified as Sedentary Work, involving exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Key physical demands include:

  • Continuous demands: sitting, fine dexterity, simultaneous use of wrists, hands, and fingers for computer use.
  • Occasional demands: pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching, bending, lifting, handling, reaching, carrying.

Sensory requirements include sight, hearing, and touch. No substantial exposure to environmental conditions is expected.
