About the role

You will serve as a OCEANOGRAPHER in the MODELING AND FORECASTING DEPARTMENT of FLT NUMER OCEANGPHY METEO CTR.

Responsibilities

  • Help You will be responsible for the development, construction, maintenance, and upgrades of data models, databases, and environmental products for physical oceanographic parameters and the preparation of the software tools to facilitate doing this work.
  • Help You will be responsible for the setup, implementation, and validation of 2D barotropic circulation models and/or 3D circulation models in support of Navy and/or Maritime Homeland Defense requirements.
  • Help You will draw valid scientific conclusions from analyses of varied physical oceanographic observations and applications of fundamental oceanographic theories.
  • Help You will assess and evaluate data, such as temperature, salinity, sound speed, and ocean current measurements, for consistency and accuracy.
  • Help You will prepare currents measurements data as required to conduct ocean currents analysis.
  • Help You will be responsible for preparing climatological and real-time prediction data for ingestion into Tactical Decision Aids.
  • Help You will participate in interdepartmental and interagency meetings and committees with personnel from a variety of disciplines in order to transition oceanographic techniques to the operational environment and support the use of Department products.

Requirements

  • Conditions of employment Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
  • Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
  • You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

  • In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
    • Experience reviewing, evaluating, modifying, and developing new operational oceanographic processing and analysis systems, algorithms, procedures, and techniques.
    • Experience utilizing analytical and statistical procedures for the scientific interpretation of physical oceanographic data, both observed and modeled, and in the presentation of the findings of such analyses.
    • Experience utilizing theoretical principles, theories, practices, and techniques of physical oceanography and marine environment for scientific analysis.
    • Experience verifying and evaluating oceanographic databases, oceanographic analysis and assimilation systems, and oceanographic dynamic models for accuracy and utility in solving operational oceanographic problems.
