Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA)

About the role

The Occupational Therapy Assistant will help occupational therapists provide occupational therapy treatments and procedures. In accordance with state laws, the Occupational Therapy Assistant may assist in development of treatment plans, carry out routine functions, direct activity programs, and document the progress of treatments.

Responsibilities

• Select therapy activities to fit patients’ needs and capabilities.
• Observe and record patients’ progress, attitudes, and behavior, and maintain this information in client records.
• Communicate and collaborate with other health care professionals involved with the care of a patient.
• Instruct or assist in instructing patients and families in home programs, basic living skills, and the care and use of adaptive equipment.
• Implement or assist occupational therapists with implementing treatment plans to help clients function independently.
• Assess daily living skills and capacities of physically, developmentally or emotionally disabled clients.
• Aid patients in dressing and grooming.
• Assemble, clean, and maintain equipment and materials for patient use.
• Demonstrate therapy techniques such as manual and creative arts or games.
• Teach patients how to deal constructively with their emotions.
• Attend care plan meetings to review patient progress and update care plans.

Education and Experience

• Associate’s degree from an accredited occupational therapy program.
• Current state licensure as Occupational Therapy Assistant.
• Proficiency with all applicable state, federal, and professional standards.

Physical Requirements

• Duties require extensive standing and walking.
• Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring patients.
• Duties require frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
