Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist (Environmental Health & Safety Professional III)

San Diego State University is seeking an Occupational Safety & Industrial Hygiene Specialist to help advance a culture of health, safety, and well-being across campus.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate occupational safety and industrial hygiene programs, including indoor air quality, respiratory protection, ergonomics, and medical surveillance.
- Conduct workplace hazard assessments, inspections, and exposure evaluations while partnering with departments to recommend practical safety solutions.
- Develop and deliver safety training and technical guidance that supports regulatory compliance and a culture of prevention.
- Support hazardous waste activities and collaborate with consultants, contractors, and campus partners on environmental health and safety initiatives.
Requirements
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Thorough knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, exposure assessment methodologies, and occupational health hazard evaluation.
- Experience conducting complex industrial hygiene investigations, exposure assessments, indoor air quality evaluations, ergonomic assessments, mold and asbestos evaluations, job hazard analyses, and recommending appropriate engineering, administrative, and personal protective controls.
- Experience administering respiratory protection and medical surveillance program activities.
- Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate occupational health hazards and develop practical recommendations to reduce risk and support regulatory compliance.
- Experience developing and delivering occupational safety and industrial hygiene training for diverse campus audiences using classroom and online learning platforms.
- Experience using industrial hygiene sampling equipment, direct-reading instruments, and environmental health and safety software applications.
Qualifications
- Professional certification such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or other applicable environmental health and safety certification.
- Experience working in a higher education, research, healthcare, or similarly regulated institutional environment.
- Experience performing industrial hygiene exposure monitoring using direct-reading instruments and air sampling methodologies.
- Experience supporting laboratory, facilities, maintenance, or construction safety operations.
- Experience managing indoor air quality investigations involving water intrusion, mold, asbestos, or other indoor environmental quality concerns.
- Experience using environmental health and safety information management systems and Learning Management Systems.

Pay
Salary is based on your experience, education, and qualifications, within the department’s budget and equity guidelines. CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,668 – $9,714/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $6,668/month.
Schedule
Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
