About the Role

Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs. Assists with providing safe, age-appropriate care to patients by performing all exams provided by the department per department protocols. Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of equipment for diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases. Sets up equipment to provide imaging services and positions patients for procedures.

Responsibilities

• Verifies proper clinician order for procedure and obtains complete clinical history.
• Gathers examination data and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
• Follows established procedures for the administration of contrast media.
• Ensures all studies have proper patient identification and right/left markers are utilized appropriately.
• Reviews ultrasound images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
• Responds to emergency situations, restocks crash carts, and maintains life support equipment.
• Assists other technologists in all modalities when needed.
• Observes patient condition and evaluates situations requiring physician intervention.
• Verifies patient identity using two unique identifiers prior to procedures.
• Ensures patient privacy, comfort, and dignity throughout exams.
• Demonstrates competence in procedures, equipment, and techniques based on patient age.
• Organizes schedule, time, and priorities to accomplish tasks within designated time frames.
• Follows physicians' instructions when assisting with procedures and exams.
• Demonstrates proficiency with power injection and critical thinking skills.
• Dialogs with patients and families, asks clarifying questions, and seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
• Understands, demonstrates, and documents preprocedural verification and Time Out processes.
• Demonstrates sterile technique and ability to perform all Vascular Ultrasound exams.
• Patiently explains the purpose and nature of exams to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation using AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Discuss, Explain, Thank You).
• Ensures patient questions, concerns, or contraindications are addressed, notifying physicians when necessary.
• Participates in the orientation and training of departmental employees.
• Provides patients with preparatory instructions and explanations of procedures.
• Completes required documentation concisely and legibly using precise terminology.
• Consistently produces acceptable images with a first-time acceptance rate, as evidenced by radiologist feedback and quality audits.
• Ensures equipment is fully operational prior to each use by checking calibration and deficiencies.
• Sends all studies to PACS immediately after completion and prints CDs as needed.
• Completes all studies in RIS before finalizing in PACS.
• Performs and maintains quality control logs for probe disinfection and follows infection control policies.
• Restocks linens and supplies, maintains department cleanliness, and transports patients.
• Performs patient charging activities on the day of service.
• Applies shielding, supportive, and immobilization devices and equipment.
• Assists colleagues willingly and maintains individual productivity equal to coworkers.
• Operates all workstations associated with the Ultrasound department and retrieves images from the console to PACS.
• Maintains Joint Commission and other regulatory agency standards.
• Takes call when necessary.
• Adjusts technique to minimize patient radiation dose while maintaining image quality.
• Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisors or service providers for timely correction.
• Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment in accordance with infection control policies.
• Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Requirements

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Technology (preferred) or completion of a Sonography Training Program.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI), Registered Medical Sonographer, or ARRT Sonography certification.
• Minimum 1 year of clinical experience (preferred).
