Assists in the delivery of patient care by transferring equipment/instrumentation during procedures to physicians. Performs a variety of duties related to the preparation, processing, and arrangement of surgical instruments and supplies under the direction of a professional registered nurse appropriate to the ages of patients served.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an approved school of Surgical Technology OR Practical Nursing OR an Associate's Degree in Medical Assisting.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of Operating Room scrub experience.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and special nursing procedures as delegated by the professional registered nurse.
- Secures, sets up, and prepares the Operating Room equipment, instruments, and supplies.
- Arranges instruments, tables, stands, and other articles in specified order.
- Adjusts equipment appropriate to the ages of patients served.
- Provide and assist in meeting the patient's care needs appropriate to the ages of patients served.
- Organizes time to complete assignments according to specifically assigned responsibilities.
- Properly prepares instrumentation following completion of procedures for transport to Central Sterile for reprocessing.
- Follows department guidelines in the cleaning and disinfection of furniture/equipment.
- Maintains general cleanliness of unit and restocks appropriately.
- Reports to Department Director/designee and equipment malfunctions that could affect the standard of care or legal implications.
- Verifies accuracy of sponge/needle and instruments on appropriate record.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to attend to more than one aspect of a situation simultaneously.
- Efficiency in processing verbal information, either in written or spoken form.
- Some independent thought, planning, or origination of options and solutions.
- Ability to apply principles of reasoning and problem-solving to resolve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and kneeling.
- Ability to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds.
Working Environment
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, latex, medications, sharps, and radiation.
