OB/GYN Physician Assistant Per Diem

About the role

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider responsible for the assessment and management of various patient populations, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of care plans, and ongoing evaluation. Within the Brigham Obstetrics & Gynecology Group (BOGG), the PA supports attending physicians, fellows, and residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This per diem role includes postpartum rounding or outpatient care for obstetric and gynecology patients.

Responsibilities

Outpatient Clinical Duties

• Perform new OB visits, prenatal and postpartum visits
• Perform routine and problem gynecologic visits
• Write daily visit notes and orders
• Write prescriptions
• Conduct routine gynecologic and obstetrical examinations
• Perform Pap smears, IUD insertions, and endometrial, vulvar, and cervical biopsies as indicated

Inpatient Clinical Duties

• Perform admission history and physical exam and record findings
• Change surgical dressings, including wound packing, vacs, and removal of sutures and staples
• Write daily progress notes and orders
• Write prescriptions
• Implement attending physician instructions for patient management in cooperation with nursing staff
• Round with residents/teams as requested and report to team leaders
• Perform procedures within PA scope of practice as directed by the attending physician
• Order and interpret laboratory testing and special examinations
• Dictate discharge summaries and complete discharge paperwork
• Prepare accurate sign-out for smooth transitions of care
• Assist in making post-hospitalization appointments and referrals
• Communicate with referring healthcare providers and institutions

Postpartum-Specific Duties

• Evaluate stability and progress of routine postpartum patients
• Perform physical exams: uterine size, tenderness; perineal discomfort and healing; Lochia quality; breast exam; cesarean section incision
• Interpret vital signs and postpartum symptoms/issues (e.g., bleeding, lactation, extremity edema, tenderness)
• Counsel and educate patients and families about postpartum events, activities, lactation, and contraception

Principle Clinical Duties

• Provide direct patient care, counseling, and teaching
• Perform complete histories and physical examinations
• Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic and laboratory tests
• Develop and implement care plans and follow-up based on findings
• Order medications and write prescriptions per policies
• Provide high-quality, timely documentation (notes, procedure notes, operative notes, discharge summaries)
• Perform bedside procedures as appropriate
• First-assist in procedural areas or the operating room, if applicable
• Discuss patient data with multidisciplinary teams
• Practice cost-effective, efficient medicine
• Demonstrate expert clinical judgment in an independent role
• Additional duties as required by the department/division

Non-Clinical Duties

• Demonstrate professional, collaborative relationships with providers
• Follow prescriptive practices and monitoring requirements with supervising physician
• Participate in departmental and organizational committees, meetings, in-services, and trainings
• Maintain superior interpersonal and communication skills
• Engage in continuing education for self and departmental growth
• Adhere to safety policies and identify/address unsafe situations
• Ensure compliance with hospital standards of care
• Participate in QA/QI projects as appropriate
• Additional duties as required by the department/division

Qualifications

This position is per diem and involves either ambulatory OB/GYN care at one of our locations (Foxboro, Brookline, or Westwood) or inpatient postpartum rounding at the main hospital in Boston.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (required; no experience in lieu of degree)
• Active Physician Assistant state license
• Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant (preferred)

Pay

$59.04 - $83.59/hour. Base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other factors. Additional compensation may include benefits, differentials, premiums, bonuses, and recognition programs.
