O.R. Nurse

Responsibilities

  • Know the name, use and location of medications, supplies and equipment used in the operating room, recovery room, the instrument processing areas and storage.
  • Familiar with the use of sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaner, operating room table, lifts, lights, cautery unit, microscope, laser, suction, crash cart, EKG monitor, defibrillator, washer/dryer, etc.
  • Ensure regular operating room and recovery room equipment maintenance and servicing according to established policies.
  • Understand the duties of the surgeon, the CRNA and the support staff within the organization.
  • Understand all duties and functions of the pre/post-operative nurse, recovery room nurse, circulating nurse, and scrub nurse technician.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and the facility's standards of quality patient care.
  • Aid in the operating room set-up with the necessary supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure.
  • Aid in the operating room clean-up and decontamination after each surgery.
  • Handle and dispose of Biomedical Waste according to policies and procedures.
  • Complete and maintain the medical records and verify information and orders.
  • Process and send specimens to the lab.
  • Educate patients and family about post-operative instruction, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Communicate and interpret physician's instructions to patients.
  • Properly train all per diem and full-time staff to work in the operating room.
  • Adhere to all Quad AAAASF guidelines, protocols, drills and recommendations.
  • Order breast implants for upcoming surgeries.
  • Keep supply area neat and clean.
  • Suggest solutions to patient crises, problems and complaints.
  • Assist physician during surgery.
  • Ensure a smooth flow in the operating room.
  • Circulate between the operating room theaters and act as a liaison between the operating room staff and the rest of the suite, as designated.
  • Maintain strict aseptic technique.
  • Adhere to operating room/office dress code policy.
  • Prepare and administer injections and medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
  • Current State R. N. license.
  • Prior surgery and medical office experience.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • ACLS certification.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of surgical and medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Skills in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Skills in preparing and maintaining records and writing reports.
  • Skills in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain Quality Control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English and to carry out orders quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to follow and understand a surgical procedure and anticipate the surgeon’s needs.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member within the organization.
