About the role

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) position at Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas assists people who have Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities. Under the supervision of the Residential Coordinator or designee, DSPs provide direct care and support to people living in their homes, licensed or unlicensed. Their primary responsibility is to support people in learning skills that allow them to live more independently and become active members of their communities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides necessary supports as identified by the Person-Centered Planning Team.
  • Communicates and coordinates with families, members of the Person-Centered Planning Team, day programs, and other service providers as necessary.
  • Teaches, supports, and performs household tasks like cleaning, meal preparation, budgeting, shopping, etc.
  • Aids people in developing skills for daily living, following their Person-Centered Plans consistently.
  • Makes sure people take their medications correctly, teaches them to take them independently, and assists with administration.
  • Monitors people's safety, performs crisis intervention, provides first aid, and assists with other types of support.
  • Plans and participates in social activities, attends staff meetings, and trains as required.
  • Ensures the program complies with Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Inspects the home, reports repairs, ensures fire and safety procedures are followed, and maintains proper sanitation and security.
  • Monitors visitors and ensures they follow the program's rules.
  • Documents all services in the electronic case management system daily.
  • Works cooperatively with the support team and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or IEP completion.
  • At least one year of experience working in the field of intellectual or developmental disabilities, with exceptions for less than one year if supervised by a Qualified Professional.
  • Medication Administration Certification is preferred but required by the end of the introductory period.
  • Maintains current certifications and trainings required by CMS or relevant governmental entities.
  • Computer skills for documentation.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Pass relevant local and state background checks and drug testing requirements.
  • Bilingual in any language is a plus.
