Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, including:
    • 9 quarter hours or 6 semester hours in human nutrition
    • 4 quarter hours or 3 semester hours in human anatomy or physiology
    • 4 quarter hours or 3 semester hours in education, psychology, or counseling
  • A transcript is required for proper evaluation.
  • Necessary Special Qualifications: A valid motor vehicle operator's license.

State of Tennessee driver standards:

  • Valid driver's license with no record of the following violations in the past five years:
    • Driving under the influence (DUI)
    • Reckless driving
    • License suspension for moving violations
    • More than 4 moving violations

About the Role

The Nutrition Educator plays a key role in supporting the WIC (Women, Infants & Children) program by determining participant eligibility, assessing nutrition risks, providing counseling, and assigning appropriate food packages. This position empowers families to meet their nutrition and breastfeeding goals through education, ongoing support, and client-centered guidance. The role also works closely with internal teams and community partners to ensure effective and compassionate service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Determine if someone qualifies for the WIC program by reviewing their nutrition needs, checking basic health measurements, talking with them about their eating habits, and selecting the right food package for their situation.
  • Document all required information thoroughly and accurately in participant electronic records according to program policies.
  • Interpret and explain nutrition data and risk factors to promote understanding and healthy behavior change.
  • Assess client readiness to change and support client-centered goal setting to encourage sustainable progress.
  • Evaluate participant progress throughout the certification period, including breastfeeding promotion and support when applicable.
  • Monitor breastfeeding aids, equipment, and therapeutic formula inventory.
  • Provide referrals and connect participants to community resources as needed.
  • Offer basic nutrition education to health department staff, clients, and community organizations.
