Nutrition Assistant (On-Call, Evening Shift)

Under the guidance of the Department Manager or Supervisor, perform essential clerical duties for clinical nutrition care and food service. Maintain records and reports, collect and communicate data relative to patients' dietary requirements, and ensure menu selections comply with prescribed diet orders, nutritional adequacy, age, cultural background, and religious practices.

Responsibilities

  • Gather patient menus, obtain food preferences, clarify food allergies, and collect other nutrition-related information. Communicate data to health professionals verbally and record it in the computerized diet office system.
  • Assist clinical dietitians in modifying menus to meet individual patient needs and diet prescriptions.
  • Use a computerized diet office system daily to monitor calculated calorie, sodium, and fat-controlled patient selections according to standards and procedures.
  • Set up patient trays according to menus after exhausting all resources, following established procedures.
  • Deliver patient meal trays and supplements to nursing units, remove dirty trays and supplies.
  • Monitor food quality to meet or exceed department guidelines for taste, appearance, temperature, quality, and timeliness of preparation.
  • Ensure no tray leaves the kitchen unless the order has been accurately filled.
  • Answer telephone and faxes, distributing messages to appropriate department or organization members.
  • Maintain sanitary standards in designated kitchen areas, applying proper food handling principles and techniques.
  • Keep the diet office neat and orderly.
  • Assist supervisors in gathering Quality Assurance data.
  • Notify appropriate personnel or follow current policies for equipment needing repair or maintenance.
  • Submit requests for office supplies, menus, and forms according to usage.
  • Observe and maintain current knowledge of department and facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or lead person that are directly related to the job description.

Requirements

  • Minimum two (2) years of dietary-related experience in an acute care or skilled nursing facility or a degree in a Food or Nutrition-related field from an accredited program (to be verified upon hire).
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Food Handler Certificate (Oregon).
  • Effective oral and written English language communication skills.
  • General knowledge of special diets and nutrition therapy.
  • Demonstrated customer-focused service skills.
  • Adaptability to changes in work environment and assignments.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate, problem-solve, and negotiate with multiple levels of staff and patients.
  • Ability to function well in a self-directed team environment.
  • Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Room Service environment.
  • Operation of standard kitchen appliances.
  • PC proficiency.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Call center or general office clerical experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food or Nutrition, or Associate’s degree as a Dietary Technician, or Certified Dietetic Manager, or related degree from an accredited university.

Schedule

  • Rotating start times: 11:00 AM or 3:30 PM.
  • Shift: Evening (3:30 PM – 7:30 PM).
  • Workdays: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.
  • Scheduled Weekly Hours: 1.
  • Job Type: Standard, onsite at Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center.

Pay

$25.13 - $30.99 per hour. Kaiser Permanente offers a market-competitive total rewards package, with pay equity and transparency. The posted range reflects possible base salaries; actual pay will be determined based on labor market data, internal alignment, and a candidate’s relevant work experience, education, certifications, skills, and geographic location.
