About the role
The professional development specialist is an educational planner responsible for assuring that educational outcomes are measurable and are in alignment with the educational design and planning of programming. They serve as a consultant, role model, change agent, mentor, collaborator, and facilitator of learning.
Responsibilities
- Education: Design educational activities to address practice gaps for target audiences (licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel) to achieve specific outcomes related to identified deficits or opportunities for improvement in knowledge, skill, or practice.
- Assessment of Practice Gaps: Prioritize department, hospital, and enterprise needs (Macrosystem) aligning hospital initiatives and environmental scanning at community, state, national, and international levels to prioritize and address practice gaps.
- Identification of Learning Needs: Assess knowledge, skill, and practice gaps within the macrosystem differentiating between practice gaps, performance issues, and process/system issues.
- Outcomes Identification: Ensure realistic, achievable outcomes that are created in collaboration with key stakeholders and subject matter experts.
- Planning: Determine appropriate interventions incorporating theories pertaining to learning, behavioral change, and motivation. Analyze cost and anticipated return on investment for learning activities, programs, and projects determining cost effectiveness of educational methodology.
- Implementation: Demonstrate use of current evidence-based education guidelines (adult learning theory, brain based learning, etc.) during implementation of educational programs. Use the CHOP improvement framework in the implementation of system-wide programs and projects to continuously improve programs.
- Orientation/Onboarding: Develop, coordinate, manage, facilitate, conduct, and evaluate orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel.
- Competency Management: Assist unit leadership teams in prioritizing competency selection and assisting with selection of instructional strategies to meet learning objectives.
- Professional Role Development: Identify and develop strategies to facilitate a continuous process of maturation through lifelong learning, allowing for role transition, role integration, skill acquisition, and mastery as learners advance from novice to expert.
- Research/Evidence Based Practice/Quality Improvement: Promote and integrate the science of the NPD specialty to continuously improve practice. Promote research, EBP, and QI in patient care settings. Conduct, encourage, facilitate and/or participate in research, EBP, and QI, including dissemination of findings.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Collaborate with partners to share expertise in planning and decision making to achieve desired results. Engage in interprofessional collaboration with multiple healthcare personnel from different professional backgrounds to deliver the highest quality of care.
Qualifications
- Education: Master's Degree in Nursing Required; Master's Degree in Nursing Education Preferred
- Experience: At least two (2) years in a clinical, leadership, or education role in Nursing Required; at least five (5) years in an Acute care hospital setting in a Pediatric Nursing Professional Development role Preferred
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or Nursing Temporary Practice Permit (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or Nursing Temporary Practice Permit (New Jersey) - New Jersey State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or Registered Nurse (New Jersey) - New Jersey State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required
- Nursing Professional Development Certification NPD-BC - American Nurses Credentialing Center - within 36 months - Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through an organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross) - upon hire - Required
Skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint preferred
- Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required
- Teaching/presentation skills required
Pay
$107,200.00 - $142,100.00 annually (full-time). Factors such as skills and experience could result in an offer above the salary range noted.
