Nursing Internship

About the role

The Nursing Internship at Steel Dynamics offers interns the opportunity to build lasting relationships with employees rather than only seeing patients once in a clinical setting. Occupational health nurses at SDI interact with the same employees on a regular basis, allowing them to understand individual health needs, track progress over time, and provide consistent support. This ongoing connection strengthens clinical skills and helps interns see the direct impact of their care in fostering long-term employee wellness and safety.

This internship is located at the Steel Dynamics Corporate Office in Fort Wayne, IN, and will take place during Summer 2027.

Responsibilities

• Assist with employee health screenings, medical surveillance, and pre-employment evaluations.
• Support occupational health staff in providing basic care, first aid, and wellness education.
• Conduct supervised testing and documentation for compliance with safety and health standards.
• Help manage and track workplace injuries, worker’s compensation cases, and related records.
• Participate in health and safety initiatives, employee training, and compliance activities.
• Contribute to the organization and upkeep of clinical supplies, equipment, and records.
• Collaborate with medical professionals, employees, and safety teams to support overall workplace health.

Examples of projects

• Perform direct patient care activities such as blood draws, injections, and vital sign monitoring under supervision.
• Assist with pre-employment and periodic physicals, including vision/hearing screenings, ECG monitoring, and electronic health record documentation.
• Support fitting and education for custom-molded earplugs and hearing protection devices, learning OSHA standards for noise exposure.
• Conduct supervised drug/alcohol screening (breath alcohol testing, urine drug screens) following chain-of-custody protocols.
• Provide wound care, first aid, restock first aid kits, and assist with heat stress monitoring in high-temperature conditions.
• Coordinate with medical professionals for new hire appointments and manage work-related injuries/worker’s compensation cases.
• Organize clinical supplies, schedule appointments, and prepare treatment areas for daily operations and emergencies.
• Lead or contribute to health/wellness initiatives (e.g., energy drink alternatives, silica exposure prevention).
• Convert paper-based medical/safety logs (e.g., confined space records) into digital formats for improved compliance.
• Develop interpersonal, technical, and organizational skills through collaboration with medical staff, employees, and safety teams.

Requirements

• Enrolled in a nursing program (ASN or BSN).
• Basic knowledge of patient care and clinical procedures.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow compliance protocols.
• Organized and detail-oriented with good documentation skills.
