About the role

This position of Nursing House-wide Supervisor at Stony Brook Medicine oversees and directs the work of nursing, social work, and counseling staff on the off shifts to ensure excellent standards of compassionate, person-centered care are maintained. The role includes supervising staff, planning and managing staffing schedules, evaluating staff performance, mentoring and training nursing staff, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and providers.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct the work of nursing, social work, and counseling staff on the off shifts (evening, weekends, and holidays).
  • Plan and manage staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and appropriate skill mix across the hospital.
  • Evaluate staff performance, provide feedback, and conduct performance reviews and staff competencies, as assigned.
  • Mentor, train, and provide ongoing education to nursing staff.
  • Ensure that clinical care is consistent and meets established standards and protocols.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and providers.
  • Manage any patient, family or staff complaints to a satisfactory conclusion.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of patient care plans, behavior support plans, and therapeutic intervention plans as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of patient care and staff activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement and regulatory compliance initiatives and data collection.
  • Address and resolve issues and concerns related to safety, patient care, and staff performance.
  • Serve as a point of contact between clinical staff and hospital administration.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to by all staff.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in New York State.
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing (or five years of acute care nursing experience) required.
  • Progressive leadership experience appropriate to position in an acute care facility for a minimum of two years.
  • Successful completion of ACLS Program within six (6) months of employment.
  • Excellent supervisory and communication skills necessary for coordinating staff activities and interpreting operating policies and procedures for staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Critical care experience preferred.
  • Nursing specialty certification preferred.
  • Previous experience acting as Administrator On-Call preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or Health Related Field preferred.
