Primary Function/General Purpose
The Facility Nursing House Supervisor is responsible for maintaining continuity of patient care in the absence of the unit nurse managers/directors in all areas of the hospital.
Essential Job Functions
- Supervises and coordinates activities of hospital personnel to maintain the continuity of a safe and efficient standard of care.
- Makes patient care assignments according to staff ability and patient needs.
- Evaluates care given by others under his/her direction. Makes appropriate changes and provides feedback to other personnel.
- Maintains accountability for own care and care delegated to others.
- Adheres to ethical and legal standards.
- Setseks for assistance from appropriate resources, when needed.
- Visits the nursing units to oversee nursing care and evaluate condition of patients.
- Evaluates the census and acuity level of patients per unit and collaborates with ROC (Resource Optimization Center) and other department leaders for patient care assignments.
- In collaboration with supply chain leadership, expedites the efficient delivery of materials (medications, equipment, linen, food and information services) to patients, physicians and staff.
- Responds to emergency codes throughout the hospital and assumes responsibility for directing staff as appropriate.
- Promptly escalates issues through chain of command.
- Notifies on-call personnel of impending emergency surgery.
- Consistently utilizes the nursing process to assess overt and covert physical, psychological, and sociocultural needs of all patients.
- Utilizes basic principles of effective communication to meet the needs of the patient/family.
- Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to provide quality care in relation to patient assignments and workflow activities.
- Deals with patient and unit issues by utilizing the problem-solving approach and makes realistic recommendations for change.
- Supports mission and vision of the organization and adheres to BSMH policies.
Licensing/Certification
- Current RN license in state they are working or covered by compact (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support (required)
- PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support (preferred)
- ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred)
- Nurse Executive Certification or designated specialty certification (preferred)
Education
- Associates Nursing or Diploma RN (required)
- Bachelor of Science Nursing (preferred)
Work Experience
- 2 years nursing experience with 1 year minimum clinical experience (preferred)
- Charge nurse or management experience (preferred)
Patient Population
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
- Understands life span growth and development principles, assesses patient data, and tailors care according to age and specific needs as per departmental policies.
- Neonates (0-4 weeks)
- Infant (1-12 months)

- Adults (18-64 years)
- Geriatrics (65 years and older)
Working Conditions
- Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
- May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse.

- May be exposed to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc.
- May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
- May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids.
- May have periods of constant interruptions.
- General office environment.
- Required to car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
- Long-distance or air travel as needed- not to exceed 10% travel.
