About the Role

The Director of Nursing directs, plans, and coordinates service activities of professional nursing and auxiliary nursing personnel. Interprets facility policy and regulations to nursing personnel and ensures compliance. Analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services to improve quality of patient care and better utilize staff time and abilities. Responsible for department budget.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the 24-hour management of the Nursing Department and ensuring daily tasks comply with facility policy, State, Federal, DEA Regulations, and TJC Accreditation Standards.
  • Perform intake assessments, including reviewing prior medical records, documenting medical history, assessing cognitive/verbal skills, and identifying healthcare access barriers.
  • Monitor patients frequently for changes in health status after new medication initiation, hospitalization, or functional decline.
  • Consult routinely with CEO, CFO, and Medical Director to support organizational mission and vision.
  • Interact with patients, families, and clinical teams to promote individualized, person-centered, and recovery-oriented treatment.
  • Create and manage the department budget.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate all nursing staff.
  • Maintain standards of nursing practices.
  • Responsible for Infection Control, conducting risk assessments, and documentation as outlined in Policy #4007 and Policy #4002.
  • Oversight of Waived Testing.
  • Speculate about alternatives, manage innovation processes, and bring ideas to market.
  • Focus on action and outcomes while balancing energy and financial considerations; initiate action based on incomplete data and drive results.
  • Inspire and motivate high-performing teams or entire organizations through compelling vision, commitment, and communication.
  • Develop and administer budgets with a strong bottom-line mentality, understanding key impact levers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or diploma from a qualified nursing school with equivalent experience; master’s degree preferred.
  • State Registered Nursing license required.
  • 7–9 years of nursing experience, with a minimum of five years in a supervisory role preferred.
  • Knowledge of healthcare, mental health, detoxification, addiction, co-occurring disorders, DSM Criteria, and terminology.
  • Strong leadership qualities and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrates group presentation skills and leadership in meetings.
  • Experience hiring, directing, and evaluating nursing staff.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and proprietary facility systems.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment, routinely using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The noise level is usually moderate.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
