About the role
The 2nd Brightleaf/Cardiac Recovery Department at UNC Health Johnston includes 18 inpatient and observation beds, 6 outpatient rooms, and 11 Cardiac Recovery rooms. The department provides acute routine level of care to patients with cardiac diseases, respiratory diseases, and other diagnoses. It also serves as the Stroke and Chest Pain Unit, accredited by the Joint Commission.
Responsibilities
- Assist physicians and other healthcare providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies.
- Provide administrative and clerical support, including PI audits and data entry.
- Offer clinical support assistance, such as cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re-stocking supplies, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
- Perform direct personal care tasks, including bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation, measuring and recording vital signs, and patient height and weight.
- May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
- Perform oxygen room setup, monitor oxygen flow rate, perform oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning, tracheostomy care, fecal impaction removal, sterile dressing changes, wound irrigation for wounds up to 48 hours old, IV fluid assembly and monitoring, IV site care and discontinuation of peripheral IV, ostomy irrigation and care, urinary catheterization and irrigation, establish oral, nasogastric, and gastrostomy tube feedings.
- Reinforce routine teaching given by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions.
- Distribute patient education materials at the request of patients and/or healthcare providers.
Requirements
- High School diploma or General Education Development (GED).
- Licensed as a Nursing Assistant II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
- Listed as a Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Qualifications
- Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience.
- Fluent in verbal and written English language.
- Able to develop basic computer skills.
