About the role

The Nursing Assistant I position is for the 25-bed surgical unit at UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus. This unit provides acute inpatient services for various surgical and medical patients, including joint, spine, urology, and general surgery admissions, as well as medical overflow patients. The campus is part of UNC Medical Center and focuses on elective surgical programs. It has achieved accreditation for its Total Hip and Knee Replacement service and has received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Aid physicians and other healthcare providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procure equipment and supplies during emergencies.
  • In the psychiatric setting, assist with reality orientation, participate in behavior modification plans/therapy, provide informal support therapy, verbal de-escalation, physical management of aggressive patients, facilitate play for children, and monitor therapeutic activities.
  • Observe, collect, and document patient information, reporting significant changes to a registered nurse or physician.
  • Assist with patient admission, orientation, and discharge, providing care/treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital sign measurements, specimen collection, skin preps/catheter care, blood glucose checks, wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive patient interactions.
  • Provide direct personal care for routine activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and assisting with ambulation.
  • Perform indirect care tasks, including cleaning the work area, changing linens, restocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/supplies/specimens, assisting in employee/student orientation, and some routine clerical functions.
  • Reinforce teaching provided by registered nurses or physicians and document patient understanding of instructions.
  • Distribute patient education materials upon request from patients and/or healthcare providers.

Requirements

No formal education is required, but preference is given to candidates with six (6) months of nursing assistant experience. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred. Fluency in verbal and written English and basic computer skills are necessary. Knowledge of the local area and ability to communicate effectively with patients and families are essential.

Qualifications

  • Licensure/Certification: Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Schedule

36 hours per week, working 12-hour night shifts (7:00pm-7:30am), with weekend and holiday rotations.
