About the role

The Nursing Assistant assists in patient care throughout nursing areas, safely transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatches services, and documents services rendered. They also function as an observer for patients requiring constant supervision and perform general receptionist duties to facilitate efficient unit operations.

Responsibilities

• Understands and ensures patient care and safety.
• Observes, collects, and reports patient data/status to assigned RN.
• Responds to peaks in acuity and emergent situations as directed by nursing staff.
• Maintains current knowledge/certification and BLS certification.
• Functions as a preceptor to new employees.
• Accepts and responds appropriately to feedback and recommendations for change.
• Displays professional working relationships with colleagues from all disciplines.
• Maintains awareness of hospital policy and procedure changes.
• Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
• Verifies patient identification with two identifiers before starting any procedure.
• Understands individual role/responsibilities during hospital codes and emergency preparedness.
• Complies with CDC hand hygiene guidelines, uses personal protective equipment, and properly disposes of hazardous materials.
• Maintains awareness of MSDS sheets and their use.
• Demonstrates proper body mechanics and use of patient lifts.
• Utilizes software applications required by department and unit standards.
• Works within legal, regulatory, and ethical practice standards.
• Complies with applicable policies and procedures.
• Protects the privacy and security of patient information.
• Bridges potential compliance issues to managers, supervisors, directors, or VPs.
• Completes mandatory education requirements of compliance, privacy, and security programs.
• Conveys respect for values, preferences, and expressed needs of the patient and family.
• Collaborates with the patient and family according to their preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
• Welcome family members at all times according to patient preferences, regardless of shifts, holidays, or other events on the unit.
• Considers the individual needs of each person with whom they interact.
• Possesses age and cultural knowledge and awareness.
• Interacts with sensitivity in delivering care/services to diverse populations as needed.
• Utilizes resources to provide care/services such as interpreter services and online sources.

  Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Preferred High School Diploma/GED preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience: Previous Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Required Classes/Skills: BLS - Basic Life Support, ACLS (AHA) - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification - American Heart Association (AHA).
