Nursing Assistant Day Shift

About the role

Full-time position in the Emergency Department at Wilkes Medical Center. Hours: 36 per week on a 7 a.m.–7 p.m. schedule, every third weekend.

Major Responsibilities

  • Customer Satisfaction
    • Introduce self and role to patient at start of shift; provide fresh pitcher of water (if not NPO).
    • Place call light and phone within patient’s reach.
    • Listen to patients and solicit information about their needs.
    • Involve patients in decisions about their daily care (e.g., timing of washing, meals).
    • Answer call lights promptly.
    • Assist patients with elimination needs.
    • Provide morning or evening care: bed bath or bathing assistance, oral care, hair care or shaving as needed.
    • Straighten patient rooms and change bed linens.
    • Transport, transfer, lift and position patients as directed; ambulate non-bedridden patients four times daily unless otherwise directed.
    • Feed patients as needed; collect and transport specimens to the lab; transport equipment, supplies, specimens and pharmacy items.
    • Communicate with patients, families and health-care professionals in a positive and respectful manner; address and resolve customer complaints.
    • Complete performance pathway on time; send co-worker feedback forms six months before review; submit self-evaluation two weeks before review; participate in TNT associate satisfaction survey; submit annual ideas for improving customer satisfaction.
  • Quality
    • Receive report from the previous assistant at the start of shift; on night shift, prepare NPO list and hang NPO sign above the patient’s bed, communicating in layperson’s terms.
    • Participate in admission, transfer and discharge under the supervision of the registered nurse:
      • Set up patient rooms: obtain necessary supplies and equipment.
      • Introduce self to patient and family; assist patient in changing into a gown.
      • Ensure patient identification band placement.
      • Assist with patient transfer or discharge, accounting for belongings and communicating special needs to the receiving unit.
    • Maintain a clean, safe unit environment:
      • Respond to call lights and communicate patient requests to the RN.
      • Demonstrate ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
      • Use proper body mechanics; remove discontinued equipment to the soiled utility room.
      • Report unsafe or malfunctioning equipment and remove from use; clean and disinfect equipment and return to proper storage.
      • Restock patient rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies; practice within infection-control policies and procedures.
    • Take and record vital signs, weight, height, intake and output as directed; notify RN of abnormal results.
    • Provide appropriate skin care; report areas of pressure, redness or abrasions.
    • Document patient information on appropriate forms; act as patient/family advocate by providing comfort, assistance and information.
    • Communicate patient/family concerns to appropriate nursing staff; provide end-of-shift report to the next assistant.
    • Recognize and adopt activities appropriate to the specific needs of the patient population; demonstrate knowledge of issues directly related to patient age.
    • Perform all work in accordance with Trinity Hospital and regulatory safety procedures and requirements, including OSHA, accrediting organizations, state, county and local agencies.
    • Participate in efforts to monitor and improve departmental CQI indicators; submit ideas for improving quality.
  • People Growth
    • Schedule required training hours each quarter; develop a learning plan and track progress on a learning log.
    • Attend all department and hospital in-service orientation and other required meetings.
  • Innovation
    • Submit “Dynamite Ideas” to your leader; identify improvement ideas within scope and assume accountability for implementation and results.
    • Participate in hospital-wide or departmental DIG each year; implement Just-Do-It initiatives in your department.

    • Interact with co-workers in a team atmosphere to find better ways to perform the job.
    • Participate in hospital-wide TNT-related activities; attend departmental recognition and socialization activities and all departmental staff meetings.

    • Participate in efforts to contain costs or generate revenue; submit ideas for reducing expenses or adding revenue.

Education/Experience Required

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Good communication skills.
  • Courteous and professional interpersonal skills.
  • Basic math calculation skills.
  • CPR (Heart Saver) certified within six months of employment.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of Illinois.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to communicate with customers.
  • Bilingual skills desirable.
  • Ability to push and pull equipment associated with duties.
  • Ability to do medium lifting (20–50 pounds occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently, up to 10 pounds constantly).
  • For patient lifts over 35 pounds or when the patient cannot assist, use patient-handling equipment with at least one other associate when available; assess unique lifting/movement situations on a case-by-case basis.

Pay

$20.80 – $31.20 per hour.
