Primary Responsibilities

Patient care involves assisting with daily activities like bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. Helping patients with mobility, such as turning, repositioning, and transferring between beds and wheelchairs, is also a key part of the role. Additionally, serving meals and assisting with feeding if needed is required.

Vital signs monitoring includes taking and recording vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate, and reporting any changes in a patient’s condition to nurses or doctors.

Support for nurses and doctors involves setting up medical equipment and assisting during some procedures, transporting patients to different departments, restocking supplies, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.

Patient observation requires monitoring patients for signs of distress or changes in behavior, documenting care provided, and communicating observations to the healthcare team.

Emotional support involves offering companionship and reassurance to patients, and communicating with patients’ families to help them understand care routines.

Skills, Education And Qualities

  • The ability to use equipment (gait belts, transfer devices, lifts, etc) to care for patients

Work Environment

This role may be different for those who have never worked in a hospital due to the fast-paced, often high-pressure environment. Patients may be acutely ill or recovering from surgery, and patient turnover is high. The duties involve assisting with post-operative care, monitoring vital signs frequently, supporting nurses during procedures, and transporting patients to tests or surgeries.

CNAs work closely with a large, multidisciplinary team including RNs, doctors, and specialists, and may be exposed to different departments and diverse experiences.

Available units for this role include: 6KLM – Medical/Telemetry, 11LM – Medical/Telemetry, 12S – Oncology (Solid Tumors), 12T – Oncology (Bone Marrow Transplant, Blood & Lymph Cancers), 3CD – Surgical, 3EF – Surgical, 9LM – Medical/Telemetry, 2N – IRP (Inpatient Rehab Program – Physical Rehab), 9ST – Cardiac Surgical, 10S – Cardiac, 10T – Cardiac/Medical, 11S – Ortho/Spine, 11T – Ortho/Joint, 4CD – Medical/Telemetry, 4EF – Respiratory, 4LM – Neuro/Surgical, 5LM – Medical/Surgical, 8C – Abdominal Transplant, 10LM – Neuro Medical/Telemetry, and ED – CNAs or EMTs work in the ED Tech role in this Department.
