Responsibilities
- Develops nursing and medical support staff schedules.
- Maintains and/or improves levels of productivity set by administration and the needs of patients.
- Supervises care provided by nursing staff to ensure current competency and best practice standards.
- Conducts orientation for new nursing and medical support staff and provides in-service training as needed.
- Provides medication administration training and competency evaluation for required staff.
- Manages large inventory of controlled substances accurately.
- Completes daily and monthly regulatory reporting.
- Assists physicians by identifying, reporting and addressing changes in the client’s health status.
- Communicates daily with clinical staff to identify client needs so that they can be incorporated into the daily work schedule.
- Provides “on call” coverage as required and assigns other nursing staff to the “on call” schedule to ensure 24-hour coverage.
- Supervises staff to ensure compliance with agency policies and procedures for client record documentation and billing information management.
- Ensures integrity, proper organization, completeness and confidentiality of the client record in accordance with agency policy and procedure.
- Ensures proper safekeeping and dispensing of controlled narcotics.
- Directly cares for clients, including comprehensive admission assessments, preparing doses for direct administration and dispensing of methadone and other medications, providing physician-ordered medical treatment, transcribing orders, and collecting specimens for laboratory analysis or culture.
- Performs and documents Nursing Intake/Medical History in accordance with agency policy and procedure.
- Provides health education to clients, monitors client behavior and participates in treatment planning.
- Prepares labels and take-home bottles of medication for self-administration by client for periods when the medical clinic is closed or for clients who are permitted to self-medicate in accordance with agency policies.
- Records and reports any spillage that may occur while dispensing a patient’s medication.
- Participates in the on-going assessment of patients’ needs.
- Follows protocols for methadone dispensing as established by OASAS.
- Performs physical count and tallies medication at the end of the day.
- Completes follow-up assessment of clients who are treated for chronic and/or acute illnesses to monitor effectiveness of prescribed treatments.
- Makes reviews lab values to identify abnormalities and reports such to attending physician or physician’s assistant.
- Reviews medical record to assess care being provided and to ensure continuity of care.
- Responds to medical emergencies as needed.
- Documents all assessments, interventions and response to treatments in the progress notes.
- Maintains inventories of methadone, stock items and order supplies and medications as indicated.
- Maintains narcotic records as required by regulatory agencies.
- Reviews medication orders and obtains renewal orders or orders to discontinue prescribed medications in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Identifies quality of care issues and makes recommendations for improvement to Program Director, and Medical Director.
- Attends case conferences and other meetings as scheduled by the Program Director.
- Keeps abreast of changes in field.
Qualifications
- NYS RN licensure.
- BLS certification.
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing with an Associate's Degree in Nursing.
- At least Five (5) years nursing supervisory experience with a minimum of which, must include 3 years of hospital, substance use or other behavior healthcare supervisory nursing experience.
- Proficiency in Phlebotomy and EKG.
- Possession of strong time management, writing and communication skills.
- Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills; ability to supervise, coach, mentor, develop, train and teach nurses/other clinical discipline providers.
- Available to work a flexible schedule and be to work all shifts as needed in response to program and staff needs.
- Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR.
- Strong leadership and effective management skills.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
